Lumiere 2016: Infestation
In this installation, I sought to transform and reclaim the objectification inherent in pornographic imagery by creating something beautiful from it. I meticulously folded thousands of pages from magazines - where both men and women are objectified - into origami flowers. These flowers were then intricately stitched together with invisible thread to form a flowing dress that adorned a mannequin. This piece was exhibited in the upstairs annex of St. Patrick’s Church Museum.
The dress symbolizes society’s relentless obsession with objectifying the human body, particularly the female form. It represents an infestation that consumes us, often without our conscious consent, leading us to wear this objectification as effortlessly as we would a dress. Each stitch embodied my frustrations: with unattainable societal expectations, with the persistent objectification I personally experienced, and with the unsettling notion that my value is tied to body image - a message perpetuated by the media to all women.
